On keeping at it.
When I didn’t experience instance success in my writing, I realized that success was something that came from keeping at it.
A lesson in writing: Just keep driving.
I looked back on other things I had tried at: horseback riding, filmmaking, songwriting. On and on. For nearly every one, I wondered what would’ve happened if I had kept at it. It seemed nearly inevitable with each that eventually you would experience some kind of success through sheer time.
Navigating success is a lot like that novel writing quote. "Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way." - E.L. Doctorow
Figuring out how to make your way at anything is like that. You don’t really know how it’s going to end up, and you don’t really know if what you’re doing is working, but you just keep doing that something every day and get there eventually.
Something I wrote recently…
I had a writing first: I hadn’t even realized one of my pieces was published about six months ago. It was one I was really excited about writing because (spoiler alert) it involves the Gilmore Girls.
A writing opportunity that’s more of a writing prompt.
Unless you live in Britain, this isn’t really an opportunity. But I wanted to include it because I love the writing prompt: on being part of the working class in Britain. If you’re part of the working class anywhere, then I bet you instantly thought of several things to write about.
Write on,
Ashley
